Eid al-Adha Celebrations in 2024
Observance of the Feast of Sacrifice in South Africa
Key Details and Significance
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, will be celebrated in South Africa in 2024.
This annual Muslim holiday commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah.
During Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world demonstrate their devotion by sacrificing an animal, typically a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. The meat from the sacrifice is distributed to family, friends, and the needy.
Dates and Observance
Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and final month in the Islamic lunar calendar.
In 2024, Eid al-Adha will begin on the evening of Sunday, June 16, and end on Tuesday, June 18.
The observance of Eid al-Adha is preceded by Arafat Day, a day of spiritual reflection and prayer on the 9th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.
