Listeriosis Outbreak Linked to Rizo-López Foods Cheese
Investigation and Recall
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with state and local partners, are investigating an outbreak of listeriosis linked to queso fresco and cotija cheese produced by Rizo-López Foods.
The outbreak was identified after multiple people became ill in several states. Epidemiological evidence pointed to Rizo-López Foods products as the likely source of the contamination.
Affected Products
Rizo-López Foods has issued a voluntary recall of dozens of dairy products, including queso fresco, cotija cheese, and other Mexican-style cheeses. The recall affects products sold under various brands, including Rio Grande, El Mexicano, and Laguna.
The affected products have been distributed to retail locations nationwide. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and discard any recalled products.
Symptoms and Prevention
Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms can include fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle aches. In severe cases, it can lead to meningitis, sepsis, and even death.
To prevent listeriosis, consumers should:
